Troubleshooting Variation Images

Updated 30 October 2026

Most problems come from the theme doing something differently from standard WooCommerce. Each section below starts with what you see, then explains the cause and the fix. The settings mentioned are at C4D Manager › Variation Swatches, provided by C4D Plugin Manager.

Before anything else, clear any caching plugin and your browser cache, then check again. Old cached JavaScript is behind more “it doesn’t work” reports than anything else.

Swatches don’t appear at all

Check these in order:

  1. Is the product variable? Swatches only replace the drop-downs of variable products. Simple products have no options to show.
  2. Does the attribute have a type? At Products › Attributes, an attribute set to Select keeps the normal drop-down.
  3. Is “Used for variations” ticked? On the product’s Attributes tab, the attribute must be used for variations, or WooCommerce doesn’t show it as an option at all.
  4. Does your theme replace the variation form? Some page builders draw their own add-to-cart form. Use the builder’s standard WooCommerce add-to-cart element instead.

Swatches appear twice, or next to the drop-downs

Your theme adds its own attribute markup. Go to Single Page › Render Place and switch between Before and After. One of the two will line up with your theme. If the theme also has its own swatch feature, turn that off in the theme’s settings.

The plugin finds your gallery with a CSS selector. The default, .woocommerce-product-gallery, matches WooCommerce’s standard gallery, but some themes use their own.

  1. Open a product page, right-click the main product image and choose Inspect.
  2. Look up the HTML tree for the element that wraps the whole gallery and note its class, for example product-gallery-slider.
  3. Enter it in Single Page › Main Gallery Class with a dot in front: .product-gallery-slider. Save.

If that still doesn’t work, turn on Single Page › Default Gallery. The plugin then replaces the theme’s gallery with its own slider, which always switches.

Also check that the options you’re picking have photos in the product’s Swatch Images box, and that the attribute’s type is Color or Image. Text attributes don’t switch the gallery.

Zoom doesn’t work

Some themes remove WooCommerce’s zoom script. Turn on Single Page › Zoom Settings › Load Zoom Lib.

Swatches missing after filtering or “load more”

When products load without a page refresh, the plugin has to run again on the new products. It does this after requests to admin-ajax.php by default.

If your filter plugin uses a different address, such as wp-json or ?wc-ajax=, go to Support Plugins, make sure Run After Ajax Request is on, and enter that address in Ajax Match Pattern. Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and filter once to see the address it uses.

Swatches don’t work in quick view

The plugin supports YITH WooCommerce Quick View and themes that load quick view through admin-ajax.php. For other quick-view plugins, use the same Ajax settings as above.

A slider or script breaks after activating the plugin

Another plugin or your theme may load a different version of the same slider library. Under Load JS/CSS, turn off Load Slick JS so the plugin uses the copy that’s already on the page.

Colours show as grey or empty

The option’s slug isn’t a standard colour name and no colour has been set for it. See Setting colours for colour swatches.
